Language Learning with Broken Hearts

For Valentine's Day, we changed things up a little.  One of the fun activities that I did for my son was a set of "broken hearts" with homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms.  I made a whole bunch of hearts in three colors and cut them in half.  Each type was done in a different color so he could tell them apart.  He had to match up the two words that go together like little puzzles.  It really helped him to understand the concept.  He also learned a few new words in the process. Plus, we had fun doing it. together.

Here are the words I used:

Synonyms (words that mean the same/similar thing)
job-work
flower-blossom
scared-afraid
mad-angry
nice-kind
know-understand
child-kid
wealthy-rich
laugh-giggle
boat-ship
lots-many
wish-want
quick-fast
start-begin
very-extremely
terrific-wonderful

Antonyms (words that are opposites)
weak-strong
over-under
hate-love
open-close
big-small
stop-go
tall-short
slow-fast
clean-dirty
give-take
up-down
good-bad
old-young
night-day
boy-girl
alive-dead

Homonyms (words with the same sound, but different meaning)
paced-paste
would-wood
new-knew
fair-fare
have-halve
rain-reign
ant-aunt
lay-lei
bald-bawled
idle-idol
aloud-allowed
I'll-aisle
your-you're
or-ore
marry-merry
sail-sale

You could do this concept with lots of other things, too-  matching up the same words or letters for beginning readers, math facts problem on one half, answer on the other...
